How Todd Snyder Is Decoding Luxury Menswear for a New Generation

He helmed J.Crew into its golden era. He started a t-shirt licensing company, which was doing $20 million in sales when it sold. With those funds, Todd Snyder launched his self-named label, sold it to American Eagle, and then bought it back. Now, the company is doing a version of luxury menswear that appeals to guys “who relish aristocratic Italian labels like Brunello Cucinelli, Zegna, and Brioni, but can’t afford them,” reported the Wall Street Journal in March. Here, Robb Report talks with Snyder about how he’s making luxury more approachable than it’s ever been.

We’ve all run into it: an absolute force field of fumes worn by that person who overdid it with cologne. It engulfs you, and them, and everyone within ten feet. The scent is irrelevant, having been abused by its user, bringing you to tears from the affront. You’ve got more sense than to douse yourself in a bottle of eau de parfum, we know. But a few tips on best practices never hurt; everyone’s routine could use some freshening up to make that nice bottle go the distance.

Five Fits With Eyewear Expert Garrett Leight

Glasses never stand alone from an outfit—Garrett Leight knows this to his core. The frames designer thinks about this when he creates them, and when he picks a pair out to complement his attire. Nothing he produces is all that risky, per se, but there’s plenty of room for taking chances, he says. “I believe that if you have confidence and you're comfortable, you can wear a frame that's too small, too big, maybe a certain color that shouldn’t work, if you know how to put it together.” And if these five fits are evidence, Garrett Leight knows how to put it together.

It’s Been a Big Week for Auctions

Grab your bidding paddles. First up, part of Tony Bennett’s estate will be auctioned on April 18 via celebrity auction house Julien’s, which will sell several of the late crooner’s beloved watches, including a couple given to him by Sinatra and another from Lady Gaga, a gold Cle de Cartier. Next, Bonham’s Fine Watches will hold a 31-piece sale starting April 20, its anchor a Rolex Daytona Cosmograph “Paul Newman” from 1972 that comes with box, papers, and an estimated $150,000 price tag. More imminently, Sotheby’s Hong Kong has announced that one of Patek Philippe’s first automatic watches, made in 1953, is estimated to fetch upwards of $770,000 at the auction block this Sunday, April 7. Says one of Sotheby’s watch leads, “It’s arguably the best automatic caliber ever made.”

Loose Thread

“I’ve taken stuff from people, too. You know though, if you steal from one person, you’re just a thief. But if you steal from everyone, that’s research.”
–Tony Bennett
