6 Movies That All Style-Obsessed Guys Should Watch, From ‘Miami Vice’ to ‘After Hours’
As flaneur and writer David Coggins points out, you’ve got your go-tos for great on-screen style: Sean Connery in black tie as James Bond; The Talented Mr. Ripley’s excellent employment of the Ivy canon; or Michael Douglas dressed as a filthy rich financier in Wall Street. But just a little off the beaten path, there’s a wealth of well-dressed fellas hiding in plain sight. Here, Coggins examines a few films that don’t try to make a big to-do out of wardrobe, but are still very much filled with looks that kill.
A Little Something for the Guy That Gave You Everything
[Partner] One day out of every year—two, if we’re counting birthdays—doesn’t seem like enough to celebrate the old man. He gave you a lot more of his time than that’ll ever amount to, whether it was spent teaching you how to change the oil, tie fishing knots, or just the value of a good work ethic. Those kinds of lessons last forever, so why not return the favor by giving him something that he can hang onto for just as long? That was Huckberry’s thinking with its Father’s Day gift guide, which includes hardwearing gear, footwear, clothing, and more that can serve pops for years to come.
The Watches They Loved First
You never forget your first. Whether it’s a hand-me-down, something you saved up for, or a gift from a friend, that coveted watch can mean a whole lot more than the sum of its parts. These celebs and industry heads know that feeling well, and Gear Patrol reached out to a few of them to hear about the timepieces that changed everything. From menswear designer Todd Snyder’s first big investment he worked all summer to buy, to J.B. Smoove’s too-big heirloom that he had to grow into, these are the watches they loved first.
Why Are Luxury Brands Waging War on the Upcycled Clothing Market?
Surprising no one, luxury brands want to control their image. That can be tough, though, when stylists like Logan Horne build their business around using high-end clothing to create brand new pieces for celebs like Travis Kelce. Cue the lawsuits from luxury brands: Louis Vuitton, for example, won a measly $600K that still made its point over a case where a Texas business refashioned its products. But some say those retooling deadstock fabrics from high-end makers are one way to envision a more sustainable future for an industry that is anything but.

This New Watch Brand Just Created a Timepiece Inspired by Brutalist Architecture
We’re always game for a Marcel Breuer reference, especially if the modernist architect’s work is being used in unexpected ways. The B/1 watch, a collaboration by artist Phil Toledano and timepiece designer Alfred Chan, references the window shapes of the brutalist Breuer Building in New York, built in 1930. “The whole thing is one kind of sculptural thought,” says Toledano of the watch, which is hewn in 904 stainless steel, cementing its likeness to the historic structure that sits at 945 Madison. An instant classic, the B/1 hits stores May 17 at $4,000 a piece.

“I believe in fate. Sometimes that means an old bearded guy sitting on a cloud and pulling the strings; sometimes it means random atoms swirling through a cheerless universe; sometimes it means everything being preordained thanks to your karma credit from your previous lives.”
