How to Thrift for Retro Outdoors Gear

Some gear was just built better back then. And if it’s been taken care of, in many cases it’s gonna outperform its modern counterpart. (An old canvas backpack or down jacket just looks great, too.) But sourcing vintage packs and puffers isn’t always as straightforward as cruising down to the Goodwill for some thrifting. Whether you’re in the market for secondhand outdoors goods to save a buck, ease your conscience about the environment, or give your trail vibes some retro verve, Field Mag’s guide will help you sort out what it is you’re looking for, and how and where to find it.

Put the World on a String With These Shoes, Rain Shells, and Pants

[Partner] It started with a lineup of water-ready sneakers. Put on a pair of Tropicfeel’s shoes, and suddenly, the world is your oyster. In essence, capturing that feeling is how the Barcelona-based brand was launched—by intrepid travelers who have an insatiable appetite for exploring new places around the globe while doing their very best to protect them. Every shirt, chino, vest, jacket, and shoe from the certified B corporation is responsibly made—whether with organic cotton or a blend of recycled materials—and balances comfort with top-tier tech to help you get the most out of wherever you’re headed next.

Men Are Being Compared to Rodents Across the Internet. But How Do They Feel About It?

It’s not the most flattering comparison for Hollywood’s young fellas. In something of a backhanded compliment served up at-large by the internet, stars like Jeremy Allen White and Timothée Chalamet are being called “hot rodent” men for their unconventionally attractive qualities, triggering a flurry of coverage from the likes of the New York Times and the Guardian. Just about everyone has sounded off on who is and isn’t a scruffy, mousy man-of-the-moment, but how do these celebs, who aren’t your traditional dreamboats, feel about being categorized as sexy vermin?

Inside NYC’s Brick-and-Mortar Shopping Revival

At first, online shopping was a salve to the process of doing it IRL. You no longer had to schlep to the store, dress and undress several times under often-unflattering light, or navigate pesky department store sales people. You also didn’t have to repeat those steps for a return when something didn’t work out. But online shopping, as convenient as it seems, has its own follies. You have to wait for things to arrive. You have to bulk order to find your size. In some cases, to create a shipping label, you need a printer. In this day and age? In New York, stores are emphasizing in-person shopping to show that finding clothes is a human experience that the internet just can’t meaningfully provide.

Swatch Drops 3 New Earth-Based MoonSwatches

Tag Heuer recently rereleased its Formula 1 watch in a rainbow of colors, and now Swatch is clapping back. The purveyor of affordable timepieces just announced three new colorways—a red, turquoise, and sand tone—that expand on its wildly popular MoonSwatch collaboration with Omega, which debuted in 2022. “The new watches, according to Swatch, have been inspired by the fact that ‘all throughout history, people have wondered what the world looks like from above,’” says Wired. Until you figure out how to hitch a ride to space, hopefully looking down at one of these on your wrist can provide a similar effect.
