Issue #357 | Your Socks Are Showing Your Age

+ The Weather’s Hot, and Guys Are Dressed…Badly. A Guide to Cool Men’s Summer Style.

Your Socks Are Showing Your Age

Cultural commentator and fashion consultant Chris Black has feelings about socks. His view is that no-show styles are a crime, which has only brought ire from swaths of millennials who can’t fathom going nude in a shoe. Plain and simple, argues Black, they out you as a dork. Now, they’re also revealing your age. Younger generations are eschewing hidden styles for slouchier crew and mid-calf options that evoke the ’90s, and the elders that can’t imagine anything but a no-show are stuck between digging in their heels and aging themselves, or doing their best to get with the times.

Is This Crepe-Soled Mule the Shoe of Summer?

[Partner] Whether you’re hopping from pool to pool this season, are headed on a Mediterranean vacay to sip spritzes en plein air, or are only going as far as the backyard for some sun, there’s only one pair of slip-ons you need on your feet. Forget espadrilles, Birkenstocks, huaraches, or EVA slides—Luca’s Drift outdoor mule is the king of leisure this summer. As the name implies, the crepe sole is rugged enough to pound the pavement, but a supple leather outer and a cork footbed that conforms to your feet will give you a very smooth ride, wherever it may take you.

The Weather’s Hot, and Guys Are Dressed…Badly. A Guide to Cool Men’s Summer Style.

Every fall, a 2018 meme recirculates with a caption along the lines of “It’s really time to start dressing.” People have captioned Dwight and Michael from The Office wearing beanies and puffers, rapper Drake in a comically massive bomber, and the original, Eddy of cartoon Ed, Edd, and Eddy looking stylishly bundled for crisp weather. The point is that when temps drop, you can pull out the corduroy, button-downs, wool sweaters, and waxed jackets, and really start dressing. But when summer rolls around, how do you layer when you just don’t need nearly as many? The WSJ has ideas.

How Men’s Boxers Became One of the Biggest Trends in Womenswear

Menswear podcast Throwing Fits starts each episode by asking their guests what they’re wearing, down to the undies. Each has to answer, boxers or briefs? If the show had more female invitees, today, more than in the past they might answer with the former, with a caveat: The boxers are actually my shorts, they might say. “Labels across the fashion spectrum are offering up boxers designed specifically to be worn as tasteful shorts, from mall brands like J.Crew to streetwear imprints like Sporty & Rich,” says GQ. Here’s why celebs like Zendaya and Bella Hadid are all going for the boxers-on-top look.
