From Sharp Suits to Startup Merch, HBO’s ‘Industry’ Is a Spectacle of Menswear

As in life, on screen, “suiting and menswear can be used to illustrate an individual’s station; to subliminally or directly alert viewers to a part of their personality, their motive, their backstory. Few shows on air right now better exemplify that craft than HBO’s Industry, which began its third season [this week],” says Caroline Reilly, Robb Report columnist and great-great-granddaughter to FDR’s tailor. Here, Reilly chats with the series’s costume designer, Laura Smith, about how she uses clothes to help build its characters.

These Broken-In Jeans Won’t Make You Wait for Iconic Fades

[Partner] It might sound like an oxymoron, but the stretch selvedge Huckberry uses for its new line of Flint and Tinder jeans makes so much sense, we’re a little surprised they didn’t do it sooner. In-house denim head Nick Kemp started with a sturdy midweight 11.7-ounce denim, layered in just a touch of stretch to make it feel perfectly broken in from first wear, and gave it fades that would otherwise take years to achieve. Why wait to get that iconic blue jean look when you can have it right now? And for less than $100? Count us in.

Why You Shouldn’t Look at Clothing as an Investment

The justification for buying more expensive clothes often comes down to a little math. By calculating cost per wear, that $350 pair of selvedge jeans suddenly doesn’t seem so pricey when you break down just how long they’ll last. Compared to $100 jeans that blow out in the crotch within six months, the selvedge is an investment. But is this how we should relate to our clothing? As assets that store value? Jonah at Blackbird Spyplane doesn’t think so.

Do These Classic L.L. Bean Bean Boots Still Stand Up?

Not to bum anybody out, but fall is going to come knocking sooner than you think. We know, some of you can’t wait to pull out the wool layers, whiskey cocktail recipes, and that beloved pair of Bean boots. The New England classic from L.L. Bean, born in 1912, is so popular that it may as well have been government issued. More than one hundred years later, does the rain boot, with its rubber sole, leather uppers, and all-American pedigree, still hold water?
